It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute. Born in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1910, Ira Current became active in photography in 1924, photographing area people, scenery, and events. He worked part-time and summers and one full year in Stewart Brothers photo finishing and photoengravers from 1928 until 1933. The fine arts department at the University of Colorado in Boulder provided work and a darkroom studio that was supplemented by portrait and other photography to finance his bachelor's degree in 1934.
